In Honor of St. Francis - A Blessing of the Animals

in observance of the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi

Priest: The earth is the Lord's, and all the fullness thereof;

People: The round world, and they that dwell therein.

Priest: Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

People: Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Priest: Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;

People: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen

Priest: The Lord be with you.

People: And with thy spirit.

Priest: Let us pray.

Hear our humble prayer, O God, for all animals, especially those in whose companionship we find joy and help. We entreat for them thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them we ask hearts of compassion, gently hands, and kindly words. Make us all to be true friends of animals, and so to share in the blessings of the merciful; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Let us pray, in words attributed to Saint Francis,

Priest: O Lord our Saviour Jesus Christ, may we have thy mind and spirit:

People: Make us instruments of thy peace:

Priest: Where there is hatred, let us sow love;

People: Where this is injury, pardon;

Priest: Where there is discord, unity;

People: Therethere is doubt, faith;

Priest: Where there is error, truth;

People: Where there is despair, hope;

Priest: Where there is darkness, light;

People: And where there is sickness, joy -

Priest: O divine Master, grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;

People: To be understood, as to understand;

Priest: To be loved, as to love;

People: For it is in giving that we receive,

Priest: It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

People: And it is in dying that we are born to life everlasting. Amen

Priest: Almighty Father, who through thy blessed servant Francis hast taught us to respect thy whole Creation out of reverence for thee its Creator who knowest when a sparrow falls to earth; pour down the abundance of thy mercy upon these thy children and upon the animals dear to them; Bless (+), guard, guide and defend them; Make us all ever mindful of, and responsive to, the needs of our fellow creatures; That our lives may reflect the love of our Saviour Jesus Christ in whose holy Name we ask it. Amen

Priest: May the blessing of God Almighty,
the Father,
the Son,
and the Holy Ghost,
be amongst you and remain with you always.
